Parrots of Aeolus 3 by Preradkor Parrots of Aeolus 3 by Preradkor
Aeolus was planet, humans failed to colonize. With its inhospitable, extremely dry, unpredictable climate, but no oceans, just few bigger seas and wandering lakes appearing every year in different location, was not very good place to live on. And it was colonized too late, only little more than one century before fall of human civilization. When human settlements were destroyed, Aeolus didnít provide environment that could retain feral humans. During war all human population died outÖ

With no human care, domesticated animals also died. Even resistant species like goats, rats and camels, survived only few decades, before were defeated by Aeolus. Only genetically modified plants, designed exactly to live in hard Aeolus climate (both crop, and plants designed to terraform Aeolus), managed to grow feral. At the beginning it didnít provide enough food for large herbivorous mammals, but was enough for insets (insects are everywhere, where are humans), and one species of bird.
Budgerigar was always liked and popular bird in aviculture and was shipped also to some extrasolar human colonies. On some it got feral, but on Aeolus it achieved spectacular success. Budgerigar is adapted to hard environment of Australian desert, where it travels long distances in big flocks, searching areas where rain just fell (and having the ability to detect rain from very long distances) where it breeds very fast using as food local desert plants what growed after rains. Aeolus climate was hard challenge to budgerigar, but it was only Earth vertebrate shipped to planet, what could survive on Aeolus without any help. And atmosphere of Aeolus, noticeable thicker than Earth, allowed budgerigars to fly at longer distances, than it would be possible on Earth.

Primary Aeolus had only rare unicellular life (with quite interesting few millimeters diameter black land algae), but during passing millennia after human arival, descendants of genetically modified Earth plants adapted perfectly to Aeolus environment and planet became more green, but still was covered mostly by deserts.
Budgerigar also evolved and divided into thousands descendant species. Some of them after 11 million years had only very little in common with small Earth bird what was their ancestor.

These two parrots are top aerial predators of Aeolus. They are not strictly carnivorous, like eagles, but flesh of other birds is the most important part of their diet. Both are very intelligent, this turquoise above, definitely can be named sentient.
When Humans arrived again on Aeolus after 11 million years, these parrots have knowledge about bronze working, they could make some tools, what they used for hunt or fishing tadpole shrimps in wandering lakes, knew how to fortify their nesting areas to make it inaccessible for predators and enemy tribes and pastured domesticated races of other less intelligent, herbivorous bird species. Finding other Earth originated sentient species, what was not human descendant but a bird was very big surprise to both human species.
They are about 2 meters long (almost half of it is tail) and have 2,5 meter of wingspan. They are good flyers in Aeolus atmosphere, but unfortunately cannot fly on most of other human colonies, because they need Aeolus like atmosphere, thicker than this on Earth to fly.

I still donít have name for them, but I wanted it to be absolutely unpronounceable for humans, because language, sentient parrots use for communicate must be very complex and have many sounds, humans cannot make. But of course they say all human languages are simple and boring like yells of grazing herbivores.

Species below is twice bigger and can be dangerous not only to other flying parrot species, but even to humans from Alpha Centauri and huge flightless grazing ostrich like parrots. It attacks from above, like eagle, but have 6 meters wingspan and very strong beak, able to break even Brontoavis backbone, if bite properly. It is very closely related to civilized species, but is not so intelligent, (it is still smarter than dolphins and chimpanzees, and thatís mean, very dangerous) but not enough to hunt with tools. It prefers using only force of its own muscles. These large flying predators are creatures, what civilized parrots of Aeolus fear the most, and sometimes treat them even as daemons incarnation.

Creature on the right is unfinished sketch of Pictoran (adult and larva). Sentient marine alien species originated from planet (called by human Atlantis) in Pictor constellation. But I still donít have good idea, how their internal organs should look like (most of pictoran body is transparent like glass, so it is important).

I like the Pictoran (it is so cute) and can help you with how its internal anatomy should look like. If your alien is a vertebrate, I recommend either two spinal cords or a net-shaped "basket-skeleton made of a grey cartilage-like material). When it is about other organs, do you think two green triangle-shaped hearts, three blue oval-shaped brain lobes behind the eyes and a green/blue gastric system are good ideas. If you can give more biological details about your alien, I can help you more.

And I liked your idea of intelligent parrots or "The Planet of the Parrots"(movie reference joke) as I like to call your scenario.

The idea of "The Planet of the Parrots" begin when I bought pair of budgerigars almost two years ago. I spend next day sketching possible evolutional descendants of budgies :D Idea of these very big and also intelligent species (and whole Aeolus story) begin when I tried to draw budgies what could evolve with no external limitations.

Similar situation was with future livebearers and these all future cichlid descendants, but it lasted longer and slower after I begin to breed fishes.

And also Lepidodactylus lugubris gecko (ancestor of almost all reptiles of planet Hope), are geckos I have in terrarium. I remember the day 7 years ago, I bought my first ones. In evening there was “Pitch black” in television. This combination just had to merge in my mind into something good. :D

Three brain lobes is by now on the sketch and i think it would be good to stay.
But blood and heart and brain must be completely glass like transparent. I wanted also transparent alimentary tract, but I decided, it would be impossible (food inside wouldn’t be always transparent) so I want to make it black or silver black. Eyeballs will be silver outside and black inside.
Element with I have most problems are water lungs. It is hard to draw so strange structure to make it usable to creature.
Pictorans have no skeleton, their hard transparent skin works in this purpose. Only elements what must be very hard are scissors bones inside two pair of claws and in chelicerae. They are hard, crystal made and I don’t know if I want them to be white, silver or black…
They will have luminophore lines in few places on their skin. Pictorans use modulated luminescence in character of spoken language.
